Our history

From monopoly through privatization to going public, we are a reference in the market for our tradition, financial robustness, and technical knowledge. We play a fundamental role in Brazil’s growth, and we are protagonists in protecting the future of society.

1939

The Brazilian Reinsurance Institute (Instituto de Resseguros do Brasil) is established with the mission of retaining, in Brazil, the risks of national companies that were transferred abroad.

1996

The company becomes a government-controlled private company, and is renamed IRB Brasil Resseguros S.A.

2007

The 69-year cycle of monopoly in the Brazilian reinsurance market comes to an end.

2013

This year marks the history of IRB Brasil RE, which is privatized and is no longer a government-controlled private company.

2017

The company goes public with trading of shares at Novo Mercado of B3, the highest level of Governance. It occupies the 8th position among the 10 largest reinsurers in the world in terms of market value.

2019

IRB conducts two of the most successful follow-ons of the Brazilian stock exchange, worth approximately R$10 billion, and turns into a corporation.

2020

The company undergoes a restructuring of the entire administration and improved corporate governance, with a focus on sustainable growth.

2023

IRB Brasil RE changes its name to IRB(Re), and updates its brand to convey the company’s new values.
