The 1st IRB(P&D) Forum, which will focus on “Challenges and opportunities in dealing with climate risks”, will host scientist Carlos Nobre on the first day of discussions. Chairman of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change, he will address humanity’s challenges in the face of the climate emergency in the keynote speech at the event, which is supported by the National Confederation of Insurers (CNseg).

“The last 13 months (June 2023 to July 2024) marked the highest temperature on the planet since the last interglacial period, around 130,000 years ago. This is the biggest challenge humanity has ever faced – not allowing warming to exceed 1.5ºC. This will demand an urgent acceleration in the reduction of global emissions and the implementation, on a global scale, of adaptation to the extreme events of heat waves, droughts, forest fires and excessive rainfall, among others. Brazil has all the conditions to lead the high-emissions countries towards zero emissions in 15 years,” says Nobre.

Also on September 11th, the program of the 1st IRB(P&D) Forum includes, among other panels, talks on successful international experiences by Simon Solvsten, director of the European Center for Risk & Resilience Studies; Emily Theokritoff, associate researcher at the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment; Erwan Koch, scientific and executive director of the Expertise Center for Climate Extremes; and Steven M. Rothstein, director of the Ceres Accelerator for Sustainable Capital Markets.

“The event is vital to enable interdisciplinary work to take place in various sectors of society, which is urgent in the context of global warming. I’ll be highlighting the Grantham Institute’s broad portfolio of work on climate change and presenting some recent research into climate attribution,” says Emily Theokritoff.

Steven Rothstein will provide an update on US insurance companies’ assessment of their climate risks and plans. “The insurance industry is at the forefront of climate change in Brazil and around the world. That’s why I’ll also be discussing the importance of the Brazilian insurance industry taking part in a similar process,” he says.

The 1st IRB(P&D) Forum will take place on September 11th and 12th in Rio de Janeiro. Among the guests there were market representatives, public servants and experts on climate change from Brazil and overseas. On the first day, there will be discussion panels and, on the second, a technical and scientific meeting.
