“Technical innovation in risk management” will be the topic of one of the debates at the 2nd IRB(P&D) Forum, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro on August 6th. Moderated by IRB(Re)’s Director of Internal Controls, Risks and Compliance, Eduarda de La Rocque, the panel will bring together international guests Stuart Calam, Simon Solvsten and Stéphane Loisel.

“In a decade marked by disruption, forums like the IRB(P&D) are vital to connecting research with real-world resilience strategies. My talk will focus on how innovation in risk financing and supply chain resilience can help organizations navigate today’s complex risk landscape,” says Simon Solvsten.

Director of the European Centre for Risk and Resilience Studies at the University of Southern Denmark, which he established in 2023, Solvsten has over ten years of international experience in the insurance sector, focusing on advancing risk management and bridging the gap between capital and policyholders. According to him, forum participants will receive tips on how to connect academic research with practical solutions to build stronger and more adaptable systems.

Stéphane Loisel holds a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lyon, a master’s degree in actuarial science and finance, and is a board member of the Institut des Actuaires. He is currently a full professor at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), in Paris, responsible for the chair of Actuarial Science and Risk Science, as well as being a member of the Lirsa research laboratory.

“Technical innovations are relevant in risk management for all parts of the insurance and reinsurance value chain. I will emphasize how we can leverage artificial intelligence, prevention, and the combination of data types, including satellite data, to improve pricing, risk mitigation, insurability, and inclusion in the current climate change context,” he explains.

Speaker Stuart Calam heads the Willis Research Network (WRN) at WTW, where he leads the operational and programmatic strategy of one of the world’s largest collaborations between the academy and the insurance industry. Since joining the WRN team in 2012, Stuart has played a central role in shaping how WTW uses academic research to support innovation in risk assessment, modeling, and strategic decision-making.

The 2nd IRB(P&D) Forum has the theme “Risk transfer: strategies and innovations” and is supported by the National Confederation of Insurers (CNseg). Open to invited guests only, the event is promoted by IRB(P&D), an area of IRB(Re) exclusively dedicated to research and development.
